In Muller-Doohm's Adorno, he refers to Adorno's Metaphysics: Concepts and
Problems, 1965 for evidence of Adorno's sympathy with the protesters. Adorno,
he says, had described the war in Vietnam as proof of the continued existence of
the 'world of torture' that had begun in Auschwitz. The problem however occured
over the "substantial" issue of action. His own doctoral students demanded
action not merely argument which eventually led to Adorno's death.
Although Adorno was associated with Horkheimer, Horkheimer apparently supported
the US intervention because he believed that the US was defending its
constitution. Obviously. Horkheimer was naive.
It seems to me at this time that the Germans were not familiar with Howard
Zinn's position on the war: his description of the actual situation in Vietnam,
his historical description of events leading to US intervention, his description
of the political atmosphere in the US over the war and his awareness of the US
administration's financial manipulation to afford the war. Talk about the
populations' political ignorance!! The lies by the administration are simply
repeated over and over as reasons for intervention, latest case, Iraq!

Adorno did not support the Vietnam War. He said that opposing the U.S. without
criticizing the Vietnamese Communists had something "ideological" about it.
In evaluating Adorno's take on the war, it is important to distinguish his views
from Horkheimer's.

Dear all,
I've written to this group before regarding this question but didn't receive
any adequate responses, so I'm trying again... I'm wondering if anyone can
direct me toward information regarding Adorno's views on what's termed the
Vietnam War. I've had it from Peter
Marcuse<http://www.marcuse.org/herbert/people/kellner/RevPapVol3JacobyNation052-7.htm>that
Adorno supported US barbarism there, but I myself am unfamiliar with
any literature corroborating that claim. In his 1969 correspondence with
Marcuse, Adorno does denounce Viet Cong methods, but beyond that...
Thanks for your help.
