Dear List n Philip,

from the quality of the questions guiding your inquiry, it appears to me at least you are no novice :-). In particular:>If so, could religion be seen in a similar dialectical light?

This is a VERY important issue in the pragmatics (shall we say) of keeping the utopian/critical "instinct" a burning. I have to be honest, I HATE hope/hopefulness...it's the wellspring of Reason's cunning. BUT, given the way the world IS (not how I'd like to think it COULD be) do the emancipatory deficits generated by the inevitable inversion of a hopeful "critical" practice (addiction to the social psychological drug of bittersweetness) outweigh the strange resistance to fascism that "hope" offers?

In the darkest hours of the last ten years of Bush Inc (and its despicable gnomish Australian equivalent let it be said) and the oh so close slide into the abyss, "certain" (certainly not all) elements in the sphere of religion provided a basis for some sort of "morality" and resistance. Again speaking to the Australian experience, during the recent Australian Conservative's regime, often religious voices were the most effective voices of dissent that were heard.
