I don't understand the basis of these demands. Europe wanted US bases
during the Cold War so it didn't have to pay for its own defense during
its reconstruction, and the US wanted these bases to keep the Soviet
Union from rolling across Europe. During the reunification of Germany
most of the rest of Europe were insisting that the US retain its base in
Germany and continue to give Germany privileged trading status. The
presence of US troops in Europe is beneficial to the host countries
economically and militarily. I think the US should be closing European
bases too, but for no one's sake but its own. We have a huge national
debt and continue deficit spending that can't be brought under control
any other way than a reduction in military spending, and we're past the
Cold War period so they have served their purpose.
Also, to my knowledge, the Baath Party took control of Iraq via
assassination and force in the 1950s. Hussein rose to his current
(former) position within the Baath Party in 1979. What's this about
1968? I don't think Iraq has had a representative government in at
least 50 years, but I admit to holes in my knowledge of Iraqi history.
Even if a return to the government of 1968 was desirable, it's
literally impossible at this point for the reasons mentioned below.
