Funnily enough I was doing just this today:

>Maybe you and adorno should examine your socialist consciences, eh?

Running through the thread of our discussion in my head re:philistinism,
authenticity, possibilities.

I still came up with the same things. To play devil's advocate in good faith
;-). Who and where are these mythic suffering proles? How can either you or
I (anyone) feel certain enough to say what another "really" wants, desires,
envisages?

I'll be rash. In a bourgeois liberal democratic capitalist society like
yours and mine I reckon what the "masses" (who are they?)want is MORE. More
money, more toys, more recreation. And I am guessing this on a numerical
basis. of course most people have some sort of affective
social/emotional/existential orientation as well. But not to the extent
they'll give up the two or three rungs on the ladder they have managed thus
far.

Maybe we mix in different circles. There must be more peace and love where
you are.

>It certainly appears religion/art/story/history have come to an end
>for bourgeois.

Surlely it was only ever available to aesthetes like Adorno and Benjamin. Do
you wanna macca?

To get back to "socialist consciences" the upshot of today's little revelry
was to have a giggle at my socialist pretensions. I couldn't even give a
satisfactory explanantion of what it would mean to be a socialist.

Yours in liberatory pessimism,

MattP
