OK. A friend of mine once coined the slogan: "US Out of America!" And now
it's more than metaphorical, with armed troops manning the subways of New York.

I hastily forwarded the Chomsky piece though it's off topic for this list
as a makeshift response for the purposes of general orientation. I was not
up to the task of writing up my views of the purpose and efficacy of
demonstrations in this day and age, and this one in particular. Other
organizations such as ANSWER and VoteNoWar have made their aims public. I
didn't pay much attention to the speakers; I was more interested in the
crowd, participating in both the anti-war and anti-IMF marches. Though I
have a coat full of anti-war buttons, I think I have tacitly shifted my
focus. This time I bought a bunch of "Impeach Bush" buttons, plus one
reading "Fuck Bush and His Fucking War" as a feelgood message. My previous
anti-Bush buttons were as popular with passersby (of a variety of
demographic groups) as my anti-war buttons. This new batch of buttons gets
me the occasional compliment from strangers as well.

I thought about the effectiveness of demonstrations back in January 1991
when I froze my nuts off in two national demos opposing the first Gulf
War. (I also participated in a small informal protest against the victory
parade, which could have been dangerous, but I was only elbowed by a few
patriotic Caucasian males and cussed at by some white women.) In this
case, however, I believe the protests made a big difference even though the
Bush killers went ahead and did want they wanted. And I think protests are
necessary now, especially to influence public opinion, even though the
victorious gangsters will still go ahead and do whatever they want until
blowback, a worse wave of unemployment, and the collapse of the American
economy.
