Hey guys,

Got a reply from Paul Leyland. He referred me to some book by Rieselman
which I am going to get now. There *is* a version of Gaussian elimination
that can do the job which is described in there apparently.
There and not in very many other places :-).
But anyway, now that that's sorted, I'll code the rest of MPQS tonight.
