Jim,

thanks for the response and explanations...very helpful :-). So, is this the basis of Kant's TransDeduct:
> the object is necessarily constructed in the way that it> is by the mind, so that there will be a uniformity in this> construction among all rational agents (space, time, cause/effect,> etc.).

just to clarify are you reading Kant as arguing that *because* there is uniformity among all rational agents then time & space "knowledge/structuring" (for want of better words) must be given prior to experience OR is the emphasis more to do with a sort of typical Kantian (divine) teleology (JR) "there will be a uniformity in this construction among all rational agents".

>This is a weak point in his philosophy that has been capitalized upon, of course.

My initial concerns were how, in the first place, Kant could claim to "know" that capacities for space/time structuring were given...this is where I thought the TD came into play?

Understandably, Kant was working from within a Newtonian framework whereby time n space are immutable, structural, objective components of the Universe. In a more contemporary physics, time n space I think are understood more *relationally* which would suit Kant's noumenal/phenomenal split I wouldn't have thought.

cheers,

MP
