>From the same article: the Culture Industry Reconsidered:
"It is no coincidence that cynical American film producers are heard to
say that their pictures must take into consideration the level of
eleven-year-olds. In doing so they would very much like to make adults
into eleven-year-olds.
It is true that thorough research has not, for the time being, produced
an airtight case proving the regressive effects of particular products
of the culture industry. No doubt an imaginatively designed experiment
could achieve this more successfully than the powerful financial
interests concerned would find comfortable. In any case, it can be
assumed without hesitation that steady drops hollow the stone,
especially since the system of the culture industry that surrounds the
masses tolerates hardly any deviation and incessantly drills the same
formulas on behavior. "
What could more effectively breed this regression that the explosion of
sports, particularly in terms of how sports is framed and presented and
in terms of how sports is translated into formulas of behavior.
Typically, the game, the myth, involves two group of 'sons,' each of
which will attempt to discipline the other as if they are its father,
daddy, or papa. The objective of the game is to embarass and one-up
the other in order to prove that the other is really just an immature
boy, hence, the framing of the games in terms of discipline and
punishment, just like the mythical role of the father. All behaviors
are described and framed as superstitious, that is, by moving or
thinking a certain way, victory is more possible!
Apropro to this formula, is the marriage formula where for some odd
reason everyone not only feels compelled to marry but is compelled to
marry without thought or reflection on the prospects of an unhappy
result. Here the myth of the enlightenment, of domination, of
exploitation, of destruction, is reflected in the myth of marital bliss
where all personal interests will be satisfied, where the man will get
"one," by which is meant not only a female but also a son. The
allusion to war is only too obvious where each soldier is compelled to
'get one.' Hence the mass exodus and consensus on 'going to war!'
