Whitebook equates the Lacanians with Habermas, as linguistic reductionists.
I think the assessment of both as such is false. In terms of Lacan,
Whitebook doesn't pay enough attention to the concept of the Real (nor the
Imaginary for that matter). With regards to Habermas... I don't see how the
criticism pans out. Habermas spends a great deal of time looking at how
power and authority work...and how they rely on non-linguistic mechanisms
for their authority and affect, albeit not their guidance... Don't get me
wrong, I appreciate Whitebook's work... but his "critique" (which is not all
that dedicated - he's got other issues he's working on) isn't very good.
