I cant deny the importance of removing land mines... and I'm a good
socialist as well... The
whole point about this is that as a species-being humans are a part of
nature - of course we
are different than animals but we do not 'raise out of nature' as
Habermas would put it in such
a radical manner that we are no longer part of it. If we were not part of
nature then the bodily
pain inflicted on us by land mines in the Vietnam War could not effect us
to the stance you
take against it... Can one come to an understanding of what it is like to
be in pain? I doubt it
but nevertheless the experience of someone having pain has a deep
influence on us... This is
the strength of Adornos philosophy imho...

I am a bad universalist and try to be a good socialist. As a
species-being my first concern is with my fellows. i like things like the
clearance of mines from the Vietnam War, because this sort of retrogade
disamaestic solidarity probably maims and kills a lot of our
species-being as well as our friends in the animal and plant
kingdoms.

Worthless?

Yes it does indeed draw Habermas' project into question - but imho there
are so many
unresolved questions arising from his transformation of critical theory
that this is
inevitable regardless of the stance towards Adorno.

The standard critique is of course
Habermas view on the relation between human beings and nature: - how can
we ever
conceive of the damages done to nature and animals because of the way
technology
works at this present state of history in the framework of a theory of
communication and
communicative rationality?
