Quite believable. I'm a student at Drew and stories about Daniel Drew
abound. He contracted a terrible illness and promised God that he'd do
something for the Methodist Church if he recovered. He did, then funded
Drew University, purchasing the land the university currently occupies.
After a short period of time he tried to pull the endowment :).

He made his money on cattle by watering them...he'd drive them giving
them as little water as possible, but stopping at every salt lick on the
way. Right before they hit the market, he'd let them drink all the
water they wanted. They'd swell up, of course, gaining weight by
retaining water.

J.P. Morgan owned a home right down the street from Daniel Drew --
currently on Farleigh Dickenson University's campus. The rumors are
that the two of them tried to outdo each other screwing one another and
their competition.

The foundations of higher education :).
