I always assumed it was a combination of maternal affiliation (Adorno was 
his mother's name) and national disaffiliation (Wiesengrund is a german 
name), but that's probably just a vulgar Freudo-Marxist explanation. Maybe 
the name Adorno is simply more euphonious. I bet the answer will be in 
Wiggershaus's tome? Or maybe in Lowenthal's memoirs?
