For a recent assessment of the relevance of Bourdieu's work, you might
want to look at the current issue of the journal SOCIAL EPISTEMOLOGY
(II:2).  The entire issue is devoted to Hans Herbert Koegler's essay on
Bourdieu's relevance for the sociology of knowledge (Koegler is the author
of a recent study on critical trends in hermeneutics, published by MIT;
in German he has done a book on Foucault) and to replies and discussions
of the essay.  It's worth tracking the journal down.
