In Martin Jay's book MARXISM & TOTALITY: THE ADVENTURE OF A CONCEPT FROM
LUKACS TO HABERMAS, there are numerous references to expressive totality;
how it is used by Althusser, Hegel, Luckas and others. You (the orginal
poster) may wish to get hold of a copy.

Jay seems to argue that "expressive totality", the idea that all of
societal determinations are the expressive of a single principle, is
characteristic or at least is part of Western Marxist discourse.

Anyways, Jay's book would probably be a good place to see not only how
concepts such as 'expressive totality' exist in Western Marxism, but
other variations. Hence, the subtitle ... one presumes :)
